Your World Christians have not always believed that pleasure is a natural and good aspect of sexuality.
Many early church fathers believed that sex within marriage was at best acceptable for procreation. But sexual pleasure was morally repugnant to them. For example, Augustine (d. a.d. 430) wrote that sex within marriage was sinless, but that sexual pleasure was part of man’s baser nature.
But most of the leaders of the Reformation returned to a biblical view of sexual pleasure as a gift from God to be celebrated and joyously experienced.
